If your KPIs don't change what people do each week, they're not KPIs. They're wallpaper.
Why it matters
- Metrics should drive decisions, not reporting fatigue
- Driver KPIs create leverage
- Too many KPIs create confusion and avoidance
- Ownership makes KPIs actionable
Do this
- Pick 1–2 outcome KPIs (lagging)
- Pick 2–4 driver KPIs (leading)
- Add 1 health KPI (capacity / quality / burnout risk)
- Assign an owner per KPI
- Review weekly: what changed, why, what we do next
Common traps
- Vanity metrics
- No owner ("everyone owns it" = no one owns it)
- Measuring what's easy instead of what matters
