Culture isn't vibes — it's the operating system

Culture is how work happens when no one is watching.

    Field Note #1

← Back to Busy Leader Field Notes

Culture is the invisible operating system of your business. It decides how your team behaves under pressure.

    Why it matters

    • Culture drives decisions when processes don't exist
    • It shapes accountability (or excuses)
    • It determines whether people speak up early or too late
    • In small teams, one bad pattern spreads fast

    Do this

    • Define 3–5 "how we work here" behaviours (specific, observable)
    • Make decision rules clear: who decides, when, and how
    • Review wins + misses weekly (learning loop, not blame loop)
    • Reward the behaviour you want, not the heroics you tolerate

    Common traps

    • Confusing "nice" with "healthy"
    • Letting high performers act like exceptions
    • Avoiding hard conversations "to keep the peace"
